Help with reverse legend Marcianopolis. Elagabalus.
« on: October 24, 2021, 12:11:49 pm »
I have been attempting to break down the reverse legend into consular legate and Marcianopolis.  Can any assist please?

Obv. Elagabalus laureate head right.  ΑΥΤΚΜΑΥΡΗΛΙ ΑΝΤΩΝEΙΝΟC

Rev. Asclepius standing facing, head left, leaning on serpent-entwined staff. See image from BMC

The BMC III (Thrace) Marcianopolis no. 43 page is shown.

IOVL ANT CELEVKOV is the name of the legate.

Nice coin, btw.

Cheers,

Thanks for the information.  This coin is particularly clear so I'm trying to equate the  :VO: and the rest of the reverse to the given information.
There seem to be extra characters.  Where do they fit in?

Those extra characters are ligate letters, ie written together to save space by the engraver. The is simply o and v written together.
Similarily are A and P written together together in MARKIANOPOLITWN. This is common both for Greek and Latin texts.

The name reads Iulius Antonius Selevkus

Dear Connect4, Clueless, & Board,

Clueless is spot on.  A little further clarification:

ΥΠ Ι[ΟV ligate]Λ ΑΝΤ CΕΛΕΥΚ[ΟV ligate] Μ[ΑΡ ligate]ΚΙΑΝΟΠΟΛΙΤΩ – Ν

ΥΠ (= ΥΠΑΤΕΥΟΝΤΟΣ [?] or upateuontos) is the title of the governor/consular legate, who in this case was Julius Antonius Seleucus.  For a bit more info on the title, look near the bottom of this list:

Hope this helps a little.

Best regards,
