Hello all,
I came across an unexpected coin from an uncleaned
Roman batch that originated in Croatia. The coin is 13 mm in size with a fairly thin
flan. The most striking feature is what appears to be a distinctive double
cross, probably a
patriarchal cross, on the
reverse. There is also faint text between the bars of the
cross.
From this feature I believe I have a bronze or
billon Hungarian 1/4 denar (quarting?) from the Sigismund of Luxembourg era since Sigismund did control Croatia at that time. The thing is, I know nothing about
medieval coins other than what I've found on the web in the past couple hours, so I was hoping that someone here might be able to confirm it. I suppose there is also a chance that this is a
contemporary counterfeit, too.
