Upcoming new edition of Encyclopedia of Roman Imperial Coins
« on: March 12, 2010, 04:41:14 am »
Hey everyone! Following the sage advice of my friend and ex-wife Angie I've set up "fan pages" on Facebook and Twitter to let you know about how this project is coming together. Since late last year the book has been in the pre-press stage. As a near-fulltime job I get up every day, watch BBC news over some cold chocolate milk (don't like coffee) and within an hour of monkeying around I dig in to touch up the nearly 400 separate sections (that number is not a typo) that will make up this 1,600 page book. Needless to say, I'm very excited to be on the last lap!

Awesome! Any sample pages/chapters online?

1600 pages, sheesh... that's like, the War and Peace of Roman Imperials, lol!

Any special requests? Since it's Joe's board I'd like to give him dibs but if he doesn't answer go ahead and give me a suggestion or two (hopefully someone won't ask for Constantine!)

I would do Vitellius or some short-reigned emperor as a sample.

How about a small guy so you don't give too much away  ;)  Quintillus.

And if you don't have my unique Annona reverse listed for him we need to talk - or you can search the image I posted here a few years back.

these suggested are ok though in both cases still pre-release. by the time they go to press expect there to be more entries, corrections and (hopefully) pricing and market rarity data.

http://dirtyoldbooks.com/eric2/theodosius_i.pdf
http://dirtyoldbooks.com/eric2/vitellius.pdf

i have to have all the files ready to go to print by the end of april and the turnaround for the first advance copies should be ready about three weeks later with the bulk coming by june or july.

some quick stats on the work:

- approx. 1,600 full color pages
- updated bios, plates, misc. photos
- pricing and market rarity data drawn from a quarter-million coin database
- covers all RIC, calico & sear byzantine w/ corrections and new material
- estimated 50,000 entries from augustus through constantine xi

ps. shawn, can you give me details on the quint by email if possible?

I always say, to whoever wants to listen, that my ancient coin collecting was given a definite boost the day I purchased ERIC. Up until then, it was no more than an occasional passtime, threatening to become boring with all the slugs I found under the crust of uncleaned coins. Suddenly, I had in my hands a one-volume affordable book with colour plates and easy to use that clearly showed the scope and depth of Roman Imperial coinage! I could actually identify those little bronzes I had in cardboard boxes and relate them to an actual body and tradition of coinage.

Of course, I eventually went past ERIC and started buying RIC volumes and other books as my knowledge and interests became more focused, but without ERIC this would probably not have happened!

So, my admiration and thankfulness for Rasiel's work, and congratulations on your near completion of the updated version!

Regards,
Ignasi
