Greek ID Help
« on: December 21, 2013, 07:30:42 pm »
I found another Greek coin in a Roman lot. I am curious as to what it is. The obverse looks like Zeus and the reverse looks like a prow. It is a thick 13mm and weighs 2.6 grams. Thank you for your help!

Hi Pendrakon,

Your coin is from Arados, Phoenicia and is very rare.

Although your coin bears no mention of the workshop that issued this short series of bronzes it´s appearance definitely confirms the coin has Aradian.

Weight and size are correct for this type.

Obverse: Laureate head of Zeus right. Beading.
Reverse: On the reverse prow of a ship, Greek letters in the field above, date below prow with Phoenician letter beneath.

Phoenician year 176 (84-83 B.C) with letters ΦΠA (QPA) above, below galley POς and phoenician letter Daleth (D).

Reference: Duyrat 2005,  Pg.113 4622-4625. (series 15).

I only know of 8 examples of this coin !!

Great find.  +++

All the best Arados

Sorry for maybe appearing boring but here are the four coins i know of (now five) from Phoenician year 176.

4622 D1-R1, Berlin, SM, Löbbecke (1906). 2,82 g, 13,8 mm, 12 h.
4623 D1-R1, New York, ANS 1944 100 70684 Newell. 2,40 g, 12,1 mm, 12 h.
4624 *D1-R1, Paris, BNF, H. Seyrig Y28883,34. 2,25 g, 14,2 mm, 12 h.
4625 D1-R2, Beyrouth, AUB Museum, no 195. 2,41 g, 13 mm, 12 h.

As you can see the other four coins are to be found in museum collections !

I have been looking for a series 15 coin for a while now, not having too much look.  :(
