ID Help : Lead Seal / Bulla / Token #2

(1/1)

turanoid:
Hi friends, I have difficulties with this seal, I guess it's a byzantine seal, but could anybody tell me what is written on the obverse and reverse?
Thank you in advance.

Gert:
That's an interesting seal. I am not sure about the saint on the obv. The right side seems to read 'TAC'. The left side, also taking the other specimen you posted into account, could well read 'O NHK' and considering the owner is named 'Niketas', it can be a saint of the same name. I would have to look in some references, though.

The rev. reads

+KE RQ
TW CW DOV
NIKHTA
AX S SVG
NELLW

Which translates 'Lord, aid your servant Niketas, monk and synkellos'. A synkellos was a high ranking cleric in the circle of the patriarch of Constantinople.
Regards
Gert
