Jumping Hare ...
« on: December 28, 2021, 07:37:56 am »
Hi Everyone !

This badly damaged coin of 12-13 mm and 1,9 grams still beats me to a determination. Obverse either a flat capped ruler (?) or god(dess). Reverse has a rightwards jumping hare. Reverse made me hope determination is possible (?) Any ideas ?

Happy holidays and thanks !

I think possibly Messana, like HCG 828 or 829.  Are you sure the hare is moving right?

I had a good look but it looks like a hare (to me ...). Its backside is in the middle of the coin, its legs under it in the dark part (I didn't clean and murder this coin !). At the coins right there's the head (very small) Its ears are standing up touching the coins rim but can't on this picture not be very well distinguished. Are there any other cities with hare's ?

Thanks Altamura !

Coins of Terina and Rhegion in Bruttium also can have hares, but not with this style and weight afaik. If it is a hare I'd also think Messana, but dont recall seeing head-R, hare-R. Could be, though.

Maybe a Segesta Triobol?
This is one from the Lestranges sale, Egger XXIII (1909), lot 183. Weight is 1.58g. 12mm.
A hound, not a hare though.

However, there seem to be enough differences that I have my doubts.

Thanks Steve !

It is possible I have seen a hare for so long in it I now have difficulty making a dog out of it :)
It is already great to have some city names. This already helps a lot !
I will just go on searching for comparisons. I love that.

Have the best of days

Thanks!
