Help Caracalla Denarius
« on: October 25, 2021, 09:23:01 am »
Hi

Here is a Caracalla denarius  with the reverse legend: PM TRP XIIII COS III PP. It is RIC 187 C (common).
However, I can't find it anywhere: neither on acsearch, nor Coinarchives, nor Wildwinds....
On the Internet, only OCRE mentions it:

http://numismatics.org/ocre/results?q=Caracalla+RIC+187

So should we consider this denarius as common because the RIC says so or as rare because it cannot be found on the market.

Thanks

 There are several on acsearch:

Some examples

The problem is that there are some pearls, especially on the reverse, e.g. at the P of P M, at the end of the drapery, or in the right field.
But maybe I just see fakes everywhere again.  :-\

Maybe rarity on RIC was based on Reka Devnia hoard, where 119 coins:

The coins cited in RD by Pekka K are the PONTIF version not the P M version of this coin.

I must admit that I had the same alarm bells ringing as mentioned by shanxi about the surfaces.

I think it's due to artificial light

The bright spot at 9 on the reverse looks suspicious, along with the overall impression of the coin. Do you have a good macro shot of the edge? Or a nice close-up shot of the area I mentioned that looks suspiciously like a sprue site?

I believe you are right: it seems to be fake.
