A coin in your collection described as Nicopolis is actually from Diospolis, also a very rare city. Type 8 here: https://www.academia.edu/6811913/Farhi_Y_2008_The_Coinage_of_Diospolis_Lod_in_the_Roman_Period_Israel_Numismatic_Journal_16_pp_140_165
The paper is written by the very same researcher who is now working on Gaza, our world is small
Hi AK2,
Thank you for the correction. I appreciate all the help I can get.
Are you certain it is Diospolis? The dealer attributed that coin, and I copied his attribution. Nicopolis-Emmaus also issued a coin of that same type. Since my coin and the legends are so worn, I was wondering how anyone can be certain.
When a coin is that worn, how do you tell the difference between those 2 cities? Is there something unique and distinctive about it?

Yes, I am quite certain even in this condition, it is a double die match. If you have
Sofaer's
collection book, it has this
type as well (all known examples were struck with the same pair of dies), you can compare it directly, it is
Sofaer 7. Diospolis is one of the cities I pay more attention to, so I kinda developed an eye for their
style, if you know what I mean. Emmaus coins are similar but
still distinctly different. I don't have this
type yet, so if you will ever wish to swap let me know, I have some equivalent in
rarity and actually better
quality Diospolis coins for trade.
Best,
Alex
