Lead Tessera Apollo? Pegasus Caesarea Maritima
« on: July 12, 2022, 09:46:02 pm »
Hi, all.  Here is a small lead tessera from Caesarea M with an obverse bust right and branch? behind, along with a reverse of Pegasus taking flight.  This is the second almost identical piece in our collection from Caesaera.  Anit Hamburger illustrated a similar piece in her article but with a caduceus behind, that she suggested was Apollo, a patron of the theater, rather than Hermes, based on this combination with Pegasus or Griffon.  The style of the bust on her example is different from our two (see below).  Any ideas or comments are welcome.  Thanks, V-drome.
