Numismatic keyboards. Where can I find them to download?
« on: January 22, 2010, 04:11:28 pm »
Sorry for posting this way, but it's not giving me an option to post a question the right way.

I've looked everywhere and can't find a numismatic keyboard worth
downloading. Would you have any idea as to where one could be found that
would have all the symbols and letters need to properly catalog my coins.

I've only been collecting ancient coins for less than a year but get really
excited when I uncover something that has been "lost" for thousands of
years. I want to ensure that I catalog them correctly and the keyboards I've
found don't have all the symbols and letters I need to do that. I've downloaded
an ancient Greek keyboard that has a lot of the letters and symbols I need, but
not anywhere near what I need.

Thank you for your time.

  Sincerly,
    Richard

If you need Greek letters you can use these (from Wikipedia):

Greek alphabet
Αα    Alpha    Νν    Nu
Ββ    Beta    ξ    Xi
Γγ    Gamma    Οο    Omicron
Δδ    Delta    Ππ    Pi
Εε    Epsilon    Ρρ    Rho
Ζζ    Zeta    Σσς    Sigma
Ηη    Eta    Ττ    Tau
Θθ    Theta    Υυ    Upsilon
Ιι    Iota    Φφ    Phi
Κκ    Kappa    Χχ    Chi
Λλ    Lambda    Ψψ    Psi
Μμ    Mu    Ωω    Omega

Thanks, but I've already got the Greek keyboard on my computer. I'm looking for something that has the symbols used on the coins. The coin tracker I'm using won't allow me to copy and paste either. Kinda sucks, but what can ya do? And I really don't want to buy another progam.
Thanks anyway for the suggestion. I appriciate all the help one is willing to provide.

You tried Ctrl-c to copy or ctrl-v to paste? On Mac, its Command c and v, respectivley.

You are most probably not going to find a pre-made font or fonts that include all of the symbols that you require, but the most comprehensive TrueType font for ancient languages and symbols is Alphabetum (http://guindo.pntic.mec.es/~jmag0042/alphaeng.html). For instance, it has a comprehensive font for ancient Oscan (useful for cataloging a Social War denarius) but not all the symbols you will find on a denarius of L. Calpurnius Piso (I am a Roman Republican collector if it isn't obvious). I've found that it serves 90% of my cataloging needs. For the other 10% (Latin epigraphic monograms of names etc.), you may be stuck recreating the symbol with something like Adobe Freehand if you are willing to go that far.

Regards,

Pablo
