Unpublished era date 109 with control letters mem & aleph above prow. It´s possible that somebody made an attempt to clean this coin, hence the shiny bronze showing in places or it could just have rubbed up against more coins or objects before being found.

Phoenicia, Arados 151-150 B.C

AE 15.14mm (Thickness 2.33mm), weight 2.93g, die axis = 12h (30 degrees), denomination C.

Obverse: Braided, bearded head of Zeus right, border of dots.

Reverse: Triple pointed ram of Galley left, Phoenician letters mem (m) & aleph (´) above, Aradian era date 109 below.

Série 13 Revision - era date 375 Confirmed

Coin no.4608d was used for the purpose of this revision.

It´s been awhile since i have seen a Duyrat série 13 for sale. I bought this coin hoping it would help solve a dispute in respect to era date 375 (EOT) being possibly year 273 (ΣOΓ), it didn’t disappoint. The letter T (Tau) representing 300 cuts through the barley-whiskers and is not the letter Γ (gamma) as previously thought, also the letter E (Epsilon) should not be mistaken for a Σ (Sigma). The bust of Helios appears to have Roman facial features and fits in iconographically when placed after era date 365, maybe some of the resident Roman experts can see a likeness to Trajan ?

I have seen a Phoenician Zeus/Prow bronze with a different kind of date.  I don't have Duyrat.  The sources I did have were old and incomplete.

Above the prow is what looks like Greek letters ΙΔ.
Below the prow looks like a combination of Latin, Greek, and Phoenician letters.  Possibly CΙΕ𐤍.

I have found similar coins in SNG Copenhagen 382 (as uncertain mint) and BMC Phoenicia p. 297 #2.  The authors are not able to give a city or a reading.  The coin reminds me of the CH dated coins on this thread.  CIE is possibly the date 215 in the city era; 44/3 BC if the city is Arados.  What do the folks here think?

I have only just noticed your post esnible.

WOW  :o

You have yourself an extremely rare Duyrat série 10, there are only 3 other samples with this era date. Personally I believe these coins should be reattributed to Série II, both série II & 10 are in my opinion the same type.

The latest coin added to my collection was minted during the reign of Tiberius.

Phoenicia, Arados 25-26 A.D

Obverse: Bust of Astarte, wearing stephane and veil, border of dots.

Reverse: Tyche nude to waist seated left on rudder, hand on tiller, carrying cornucopia with bunch of grapes right,  Phoenician letter qoph (Q) above Tyche´s outstretched arm, Aradian era date 284 (ΔΠΣ) below.

I have searched all of my reference books and known websites resulting in the following hits.

BNF
https://gallica.bnf.fr/ark:/12148/btv1b8535752t.r=ARADOS?rk=10944260;0

ANS
http://numismatics.org/collection/1944.100.70730?lang=en

The ANS references are as follows; BMC.350 / RPC 4475. The BMC reference is of a coin with similar obverse & reverse and I can't seem to track down an image of RPC 4475. If anybody can help with further information regarding RPC 4475 or the whereabouts of additional coins of this type minted during the reign of Tiberius, It would be really appreciated.

Unfortunately RPC I has no picture of 4475.
Similar coin 4476 is dated   :Greek_Zeta: :Greek_Koppa: :GreeK_Sigma:  (38/39) under Caligula.

I'm not sure what you are looking for, but the coin from the BnF is from the collection of Louis De Clercq and has been described by Georges Le Rider and Henri Seyrig in "Objets de la collection Louis De Clercq, donnés en 1967 au Cabinet des Médailles de la Bibliothèque Nationale par M. et Mme Henri de Boisgelin" (long title  :)),Revue Numismatique Année 1968 10 pp. 7-50: https://www.persee.fr/doc/numi_0484-8942_1968_num_6_10_958
The coin is described as number 321 on page 15 and depicted on plate III: https://www.persee.fr/doc/numi_0484-8942_1968_num_6_10_2648

Perhaps this helps.

The coin belonging to ANS has the following references on their website, BMC.350 / RPC 4475. I had already wrote that the BMC reference was incorrect due to it not being a Tiberius issue. I also wrote that i needed an image of the RPC 4475 coin, but unfortunately it was not included in RPC.

I'm sure the Revue Numismatique links will be useful during my studies of Roman provincial issues of Arados. Thanks for your help Altamura, I´m really pleased to be able to add a Tiberius coin to my collection.  +++

New Coin Type

This coin is the only one of its kind so far discovered. A possible explanation for the unorthodox obverse and reverse combination is that the dies used were probably rejected due to the retrograde bust of Tyche and the omitted era date on reverse. The obverse depicts the well established bust of Tyche with turreted crown, but lacks the palm-frond over shoulder often seen on coins of Arados.

Tyche´s facial features are not too dissimilar to other bronze emissions of the same period, but bare greatest resemblance to série 3 coins that also lack palm-frond. The reverse with prow of galley and Phoenician letters ayin & taw on opposite sides of the Aradian monogram AP (also seen on série 3 coins), establishes a strong argument that the coin was struck in the vicinity of Aradian year 49 (211-210 B.C).

Phoenicia, Arados 219-175 B.C (211-210 B.C)

AE 14.99mm (Thickness 2.23mm), weight 2.69g, die axis = 6h (180 degrees), denomination C.

Obverse: Turreted head of Tyche left (Retrograde), border of dots.

Reverse: Prow of galley left, stem rising forward in a curve, Phoenician letters taw (T) & ayin (‘), on either side of AP.

Ref: New Coin Type; Similar reverse as Duyrat 2005 Pg.52 No.1663-1667 (Série 3) but without era date in exerque.

Mistakes are made by auction houses in respect to identification and referencing of coins, on this occasion beneficial to my collection. The coin below was advertised has being minted during the reign of Trajan, when in fact it was minted during the reign of Augustus and considerably more scarce. The Phoenician letters combining the city control mark or minters/engravers mark are very unusual and specific to this type. Condition wise this coin ranks as one of the best preserved coins of it's type  ;D

Included below is a BM London coin of the same type.

Phoenicia, Arados 1 B.C-1 A.D

AE 20.48mm (Thickness 3.30mm), weight 6.80g, die axis = 2h (60 degrees).

Obverse: Bust of Astarte-Europa right with head of Augustus.

Reverse: Humped bull galloping left, head facing, Phoenician letters beth (B), taw (TH), zayin (Z) & aleph (´) above, Aradian era date 258 (ΣNH) below.

Bit of fun  ;D

I can assure the reader that this is not a metal detector find.

I acquired this 3 years ago during a trip to Thailand, I think the weight is around 84kg (185 pounds or 13,2 stones). Unfortunately I do not have an image of the obverse, I apologise if this is a violation of Forvm rules. Are there any board members who can help me with identification and [Removed by Admin  8)] ?

Forvm friends, please feel free to offer your thoughts and observations regarding the coin type below. These coins are super rare with only two known museum samples, one residing in the BNF collection and the other belonging to the British museum. I have posted here in my Bronze thread simply because i suspect all of the coins are fourrée (bronze core).

The coin (no. ADX) in my collection has a slightly concave reverse and exhibits the usual features of a struck flan (no apparent signs of casting), there are also minute traces of silvering indicating a fourrée. The flan edge varies in thickness and a test nick is visible to the left of the chain hole above Poseidon’s head. The iconographic details on both the obverse and reverse seem convincing and look accurate for the suggested era date. Significant differences in flan size and weight can be ascertained when compared to the BNF and BNC samples.

When studying the available imagery of the afore-mentioned coins, both appear to show signs of plating (silvering); more so on the BNF coin (btv1b8535407z). Note also that the BMC coin was suspected as being a counterfeit. G. F. Hill gave his own observation which when roughly translated from the Duyrat 2005 publication reads as follows; G.F. Hill notes that the extreme rarity of these coins caused the BMC to classify their own coin has a counterfeit. Rarity alone should not be a decisive indicator of a coin’s authenticity; perhaps suspicions were raised when the BMC coin was studied in closer detail.

Phoenicia, Arados 174-173 B.C

AR 39.37mm (Thickness 2.50mm), weight 21.45g, die axis = 12h (0 degrees),  Tetradrachm (Fourrée)

Obverse: Head of Poseidon right, wreathed with a marine plant; behind shoulder trident.

Reverse: Zeus standing left, wearing himation over left shoulder and lower part of body; in extended right hand is a winged thunderbolt; left hand resting on sceptre; at his feet palm tree; in left field IN and era date πς (86).

Ref: Duyrat 2005 Pg.70, No.2493-2494; BMC Phoenicia Pg.20, No.146, Pl.III 18.
