Cladius II character holding?
« on: June 08, 2022, 04:00:53 am »
Hello,

The reverse is in my opinion: GENIVS AVG. But the character holds something with left arm. What is it? It can be the wear giving impression of this large vertical form or die break.. Tell me your opinion. On right field there is a letter C or gamma?

The Cornucopia often looks strange and too thin on Claudius II coins.

But on better preserved examples you can see that it is a cornucopia.

e.g. https://www.acsearch.info/search.html?id=65529

IMHO on your coin you don't see the arm but only the cornucopia

The arm is invisble but the form on left is undetermined.

Do we discuss the object he is holding with his left arm, so in the photo on the right, or something on the left ??

Type: Genius, wearing polos on head, nude except for cloak around shoulders, standing left by altar,
holding patera in right hand and cornucopiae in left hand

It's not a clear structure and maybe just a defect or deposit.

Somehow it resembles a thunderbolt, but the examples with Jupiter holding a thunderbolt have a different legend.

I thinks its impossible to know what is the original character. I will classify it as the usual representation.
