Coin requires exact identification, please.
« on: May 26, 2022, 01:27:03 pm »
Hello all.

I've been struggling to identify this coin exactly, after many hours of comparisons. Please can someone help.

There is a gap between the letters above the head (sorry, if I'm not using the correct terms).
The ties on the wreath and the wreath itself have a very specific style.
The standards do not have squares or lines, and the crescents face downwards.
The nose is down-turned.

Without doubt a follis of Constantine I minted in Trier
Unfortunately the mint mark is not clear on the photo (size doesn't help always), but it is definitely TR and the design of the standards is Trier-like (Page 25 in Guido Bruck's book)

Regards
Klaus

A nice excel file for this type can be found here

Interesting. Apparently type unlisted in RIC.

CONSTANTINVS MAX AVG, bust r., laureate, draped and cuirassed. TRS :star:
in exergue.

RIC lists similar type (TRIER 544) but with bust diademed.

Could you give me, please, the weight and the diameter of your coin?

None of the details you noted are really relevant for attribution or classification of the coin.

Some resources do divide legends by break, but not all.

The diadem ties, form of standards and nose are just artistic variation. They can be useful for determining mint, if you know mint styles, but are not actually intentional variations and so are not detailed in most references.

TR dot [P]

Unusually big dot is possible but I still see at the end something which is definitely more similar to star than to upper part of "P". Let's owner decide.
