Same coin or different -- Gallienus Acmonenia

(1/2) > >>

77HK77:
I'm curious if the group thinks it the same coin or maybe a problem.
Sold at two reputable auction houses

Top sold 2013
Listed as 31mm 19.55g  6H

Bottom coin sold this year
Listed as 31mm 19.20  7h

I couldn't make up my mind if the bottom coin was a cleaned version of the top or two different coins

Dominic T:
Exact same flan=exact same coin. Not sure « only » cleaned though.

77HK77:
Exact same coin flan could also mean cast

The question I'm struggling with: Could the top coin be cleaned to produce the bottom coin or are they separate coins with different patina's applied?

Mark Fox:
Dear HK, DT, & Board,

In my humble opinion, it is the exact same coin that was cleaned and then dirtied up again with fake sediments.  The tiny areas of broken patina in front of the emperor's nose, on the back of his head, and elsewhere are not details I would expect to see on a normal cast coin.

Hope this helps.

Best regards,

Joe Sermarini:
Same coin. A bit of repatination. Perhaps a little overdone, but I have little doubt it will get a better price. Which would you rather have in your collection?
