Tyche / Fortuna of Heliopolis AE23
« on: November 05, 2021, 07:19:59 am »
AE23, 6.45 gr 22.4 - 23.5 mm.

Obv: Tyche / Fortuna of Heliopolis turreted with cornucopia on shoulder,

Rev: Emperor standing left with patera over lighted altar and sceptre.

Latin legend, with .. O L ..

Tyche looks similar to the reverse on coin of Geta shown below (4981868.m).

Dear Pekka and Board,

Your coin is almost certainly an issue of Corinth struck for Julia Domna in one of her fancy poses on this city's coinage.  The obverse of this coin in the BnF is strikingly similar to the piece under study:

The reverse of your coin is more of a mystery to me.  I did not come across any standing emperor types for Corinth in NCP, but your coin does share some similarities with this Dionysus reverse for Antoninus Pius:

Unfortunately, it is a type I have so far been unable to find for any of the Severans.

I may be able to dig deeper with larger and clearer pictures of your coin, but in any event, I hope I have done some good already.

Best regards,

Thank you for taking your time on this coin.

Corinth looks possible place to look, as the legend may read: cOL IVL.

I take a look to this direction as BCD 898 and maybe 901 shares this obverse.

Dear Pekka and Board,

Not a reverse die match, but still a satisfying sight all the same!

If I drank (or at least had more than a little once every eon), I probably would have a glass of wine about now.

Indeed very similar, so certainly from same hands.
