Small lead seal with tree or Menorah?
« on: June 20, 2014, 04:17:22 pm »
Hi, all.  Here is a small lead seal from Caesarea Maritima.  The obverse looks to me like a Gorgon, or possibly a lion's face, depending on the angle of the light.  The reverse reminded me of a Menorah seal posted recently on the Biblical and Judaean board, but that explanation does not seem to make sense here because of the obverse figure, so perhaps it is a tree.  Any ideas or parallels would be welcome.  Thanks, V-drome

Could well be a menorah. Maybe a kantharos on the other side?
Regards
Gert

Hi Gert.  From the photo a Kantharos looks possible, however in hand the "handles" are quite thick and do not seem to connect to any part of the design.  I will try to get a better picture with different lighting, but the details are quite lacking.

Thanks, Jimi

Looks like menorah for me too. Palm trees have different direction of branches.
