What is this object on rev.? Help needed!
« on: May 08, 2020, 04:55:43 pm »
Dear Friends!

I am aware that there is the opinion that imitations are not bound to realities in the choice of their backsides. But I think that the die cutter must have had a role model. Here I have the question, what could it have been ? Unfortunately a part of the representation is damaged by a die break.

Therefore I have shown the back side again and marked clear structures yellow for comparison.

Now I only hope that somebody has a good idea!

With thanks in advance
Jochen

Look like the imitation a Centaur forepart and missed back part...

Just a person standing facing with the lower part damaged or missing?

I agree.

A person,  wearing a short chiton, one leg missing,  If the heart like structure indicates a female, Artemis is the only possibility.

The obverse legend starts with AVT KM?. Goridan III ???

Thank you for sharing your opinions. My first idea was a cult object. The other known imitatives are showing wine-grapes, club of Herakles, snake-staff of Asklepios and crescents with stars. But a human figure is an interesting consideration.

The ruler in question is Elagabal, in whose reign these imitations circulated.

I agree with other comments, I see a person with arms placed over their front. Some form of dress but not sure why they only have one leg!

We may never know the answer but its quite amazing to think 1800 years ago that a person was creating this. When I first got in to collecting I liked uncleaned Romans found in the UK and ended up with a few barbs and their is something special about their uniqueness. Tiny works of arts and whilst I cannot prove it, I do think you see characteristics of former times in these coins. They have a Celtic style to them, far more fluid and abstract compared to the official Romans they were copying. Obviously, the counter argument will be they may not have had the expertise or tools but I like to believe they did use some artistic freedom.

Thanks
Steve

Owl? That would be a very unusual object on coins of Nikopolis.

Dear Friends of provincial coins!

The object on this coin has not left me in peace. Now I have talked with  an expert for antique statues about it. And he immediately replied that it would undoubtedly be an illustration of Aphrodite:

"Aphrodite after bathing, depicted from behind, has put her right leg on a stool to dry off."

That explains all the details that caused me trouble: The left vertical structure at the bottom is her left leg, and the right one belongs to the stool. I for myself was convinced by this explanation and I wanted to share this discovery with you.

I have added a new photo.

Best regards
Jochen

Is there a "non barbaric" coin model for this hypothesis?

I am looking for this model too. It could also be a statue.

Obviously Lady Godiva riding flamingo, one leg raised.

(The flamingo that is, not herself.)
