Roman Provincial coin with countermark.
« on: December 20, 2016, 07:50:38 am »
Hi, could someone help me identify this rather bad coin.

I think that it is a coin from a roman province, that has been countermarked in the Julio-Claudian dynasty.

The coin:

Bronze
26,1 mm.
6,71 g.

Thank you in advance.

Johnny

Merry Christmas.

Countermark Howgego 578 on barbarous AVGVSTVS
dupondius. Nonsense legend on obverse.

Actually, not a bad coin at all--a certainly barbarous imitation with a great countermark.  Anyone interested in the topic would see it as much better than average.

Could the under-type be a Spanish imitative??

Hi otl,

I thought of that myself as soon as I looked at it. Actually, that is one of 2 possibilities that popped into my mind.

The other possibility is Ephesos, like these (scroll down, coin # 3 and 4):

The reverse wreath bears a resemblance.

Yes very possible, Howgego 578 is listed found on CA- and AVGVSTVS-
types.

The reverse looks a bit like an Augustus IVLIA TRAD, the obverse not so much.

Thank you for helping me with this coin.

May you all have a nice Saturnalia festival, with a lot of food and nice percents, and may your slaves  treat you well on the day that they are to be your master.

In hope that Saturn will bring you a healthy and prospers New Year, I send you the best wiches
