A new rev variant for Caracalla

Caracalla as Caesar, AD 195-198
AE 18, 3.13g, 195°
obv. M AV KA - ANTWNINoc
Bust, draped and cuirassed, bare-headed, r.
rev. NIKOPOLITWN PROC IC
Crescent wit 6-pointed star in the cavity
Letter A in field between lower rays of star
ref. a) not in AMNG
      b) not in Varbanov
      c) not in Hristova-Hoeft-Jekov (2017):
rev. No. 8.18.48.1 var. (without A in field)
          obv. e.g. No. 8.18.48.1
submitted by Mr. Pfeiffer ("Markianopolis")

Nikopolis doesn't sign the denominations of its coins with letters like Markianopolis and some other mints. All the more this A is mysterious.

I think that the coin has been roughly cleaned, but the A was part of the original design, not added by the cleaner.

Apparently you couldn't find the same obv. die used with some other rev. type?

       Laureate head r.

I's very curious that we now have 2 identical types, one with palm branch, one without!

A palm branch in field is hard to make out in my HHJ 2012, p. 34 (3 photos). The normal place for a palm branch would of course be in Nike's left hand and over her shoulder.

A completely new type for Antoninus Pius

Antoninus Pius, AD 138-161
AE 30(?)
obv. {AVT AI ADR]IAN - ANTWNEINOC
       Bare head r.
rev. NEI[KO] - POLEITWN / PROS ISTR
City goddess, in long garment, wearing mural crown, stg. frontal, resting with l. hand on
long sceptre and holding in extended r. hand Nike with wreath
ref. a) not in AMNG
      b) not in Varbanov
      c) not in Hristova-Hoeft-Jekov (2017):
          rev. not listed
obv. e.g. No. 8.6.45.3 (same die)
       probably unlisted
Felzmann, Auction 162, June 2018

A similar type - goddess with Nike on extended r. hand - is known for Antoninus Pius, depicting Tyche wearing kalathos and holding cornucopiae: HrHJ (2017) No. 8.6.45.3. I think these 2 types belong together as pair.

Dear Friends of Nikopolis!

Because Mr. Jekov is printing the new 2018 edition of "Hristova-Hoeft-Jekov, The Coinage of Nicopolis ad Istrum" I close this thread. All 131 entrances will be taken over into the new edition. And I will start a new thread "Nikopolis Addenda #6" for further additions.

The result of this thread was:
1) new types ....................... 26 (known motives, but different depictions)
completely new ones .............16 (new unknown motives)
(2) legend variants …............. 41
(3) new die combinations ….... 54
(4) corrections ..................... 39
---------------------------------------
sum ……............................. 160

Best regards
