TIF, I'm sure I've complimented you on acquiring that tetradrachm a dozen times, but I never grow tired of looking at it. I'm sure you don't either!

Nice dolphins, everyone!  A Taras remains on my buy list, awaiting the right coin at the right time at the right price.

I have a few coins to add.

SICILY, Syracuse. Agathokles
310-305 BCE
AR tetradrachm, 17.40 g, 24 mm
Obv:  head of the nymph Arethusa left, wearing grain wreath, earring and necklace; around, three dolphins; under, monogram (NK?)
Rev:  ΣYPAKOΣIΩN, fast chariot charioteer leads to left, holding reins and kentron; above, triskeles; in exergue, monogram
Ref:  Ierardi 9; SNG Copenhagen 573 var., SNG ANS 637

LUCANIA, Velia
305-290 BCE
AR didrachm, 17.5 mm, 7.3 gm
Obv: Head of Athena right, wearing crested helmet, decorated with griffin; at left, A
Rev: YEΛHTΩN; lion standing on exergual line; above dolphin between I and Φ
Ref: SNG ANS 1375-6

THRACE. Byzantion
340-320 BCE
AR siglos, 17 mm, 5.0 gm
Obv: Heifer standing left on dolphin swimming to left
Rev: Incuse mill-sail pattern
Ref: SNG BM Black Sea 21

TIF, I love your tetradrachm!  :o
I remember that auction. Here we have a beautiful genuine coin, sold by an auction house that in these days has been the focus of hard criticism by some forvm users, going as far as to propose a NFSL nomination!!! (wisely removed by Joe)

Your coin is absolutely marvelous, congratulations TIF!!
Just a note, Ierardi 9 is a wrong reference, the correct is Ierardi 12 (O2-R8), the obverse die is one of the earliest for the type, and it is considered one of the most beautiful among the 16 known obverse dies. (known reverse dies are 55)

Regards
Nico

Thanks, John!  I don't mind more compliments and you are right-- I never tire of admiring this coin and remain thrilled to own it :)

Thank you so much for that correction, Nico!  And yes, it is a shame about the many problems in [REMOVED BY ADMIN].  It is going to be challenging for [REMOVED BY ADMIN] to recover from that.

Two more dolphins for the pod, although they are partially off flan and a little hard to see! (They flank Larissa's neck facing downwards)

that's a nice group Taras. all of the dolphins here are quite interesting, and congratulations to all.

here is one i just aquired last month. it might be a rodeo dolphin the way the rider is jumping off!
anyway, this isn't the prettiest dolphin in my pool, but it is the rarest...

Hey friends, here water is getting a bit stagnant. Let's try to revitalize it!
I add into our pod some shy and elusive dolphins, they are swimming around Apollo's head, on a rare Neapolitan bronze from my collection...

Bye :)
Nico

So is mine  . Extremely shy :)

Hi TIF,

That's a beautiful Syracuse tetradrachm.

And I love the Velia coin too. It is fine style and has nice eye appeal.

here is yet another coin from Taras, this one a mini-pod unto itself...
https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-119575

in fact, with the inscription on the reverse it might even be considered an 'I'-pod.    ::)

but this pair of dolphins is quite special in that they once swam in the pool of Michel Vlasto himself, this being a plate coin from the 1947 catalog of his incredibly important collection of Tarentine coins.

hi Nico,

both are nice fractions (i love the elephant!), but i notice that your 1549 has what looks like some of the same red schmootz on it as mine. do you think it could be the same phenomenon?

here's my latest tuna-net victim...
https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-121558

this one isn't too different from my other Tarentine litrae, except that the dolphin is swimming left.
no wonder he got caught!
