Just added the 52nd coin to my Apollonia Pontica collection (somebody stop me!) - a unique and rare "cootie" fish Medusa!  (Google it if you didn't have one as a kid)   ;)

Just added a Thessalian League Apollo that is worth a look, even if you seen it already in one of the four other threads/galleries I've posted it in!   ;D

Kind of lucked into this one as I didn't realize it was an older style until I had it in hand and started doing some reseach:

More information may be found here:

And while you are there, don't forget to check out my new Thessalian League Apollo drachm (as previously advertised)!  :)

In honor of my latest drachm, I've redone my Apollonia Pontica gallery using Topalov's catalog numbers which puts a nice chronological order to things.  I'm also revising coin descriptions so they are more inline with the Kindle descriptions (https://www.forumancientcoins.com/board/index.php?topic=78650.0).

Another new Medusa drachm from Apollonia Pontica:

Topalov 45 - Silver Drachm
450 – 404 B.C.
Silver drachm
2.81 gm, 14 mm
Obv: Attic Gorgon head facing, snaky ringlets circle face.
Rev.: Anchor; A to left, crayfish to right
Topalov Apollonia p.588, 45; p.347, 4;  Sear 1655var

To me this coins appears to be an early transition from the heavier archaic Ionian style Medusa (3.2 grams) to the lighter Attic Medusa (2.8 grams) incorporating design elements from a serious trading partner, Parion, Mysia (note the elongated snakes below the chin as well as the cute bow on top!).   Also, much more accurate detail on the crayfish of the reverse (greatly appreciated by me, being a marine biologist and all).  But most importantly, ya gotta love that smile!

Guess who got a new toy?   Saved up my credit card points and got a new Canon EOS T3i.  Picked up a 100 mm macro lens and am now playing with extension tubes.  Had to modify my old camera stand, but love the new camera and laptop connections.

Here is my first victim:

Teos, Ionia
478 - 449 B.C.
Silver Tetartemorion
0.15 gm, 6 mm
Obv.: Head of griffin right
Rev.: Quadripartite incuse square
Balcer 124

Congrats on the new camera!

Great shot of a hard to photograph tiny coin!!!

Really shows off the crystalization.

Look forward to seeing more.

Best Regards!

The mighty Herakles doing battle:

Taras (Tarentum), Calabria
380-325 B.C.
Silver diobol
0.91 g, 13 mm
Obverse: head of Athena right wearing crested helmet decorated with hippocamp
Reverse: Heracles nude standing right, strangling the Nemean lion with neck grip, club left, [TAΡANTINΩN] right, K between legs
Taras mint
Sear 351var;
BMC Italy p. 206, 358var

Looks like the coin may have done battle as well!

Also, please check out the larger size photos of the latest coins in my gallery.  The Alexander is kinda neat looking in the king size view (click on the pic).  It is a "focus stack" composite of three photos.

Nice addition!

I like the 3/4 profile portrait 8)

Unlike some, I think the crystalization adds value, interest, and authenticiy!
