Pottery fragment from Rhodes.. ancient?
« on: May 11, 2014, 06:48:39 am »
Hi Guys,

I have had this bit of thrown ceramic since 1991 when I lived on Rhodes, I don't remember exactly where I found it, somewhere around ancient Kamiros, I think,  but I do remember thinking, " cool.... this was probably made a LONG time ago.."

( I was 20 years old and oblivious to any rules regarding picking stuff up and putting it in your pocket, if such rules even existed back then...)

Since then it has been an ornament in 2 different fish tanks, in two different countries, and now resides in my "Interesting Nerd Stuff" cabinet along with various mineral samples, fossils, meteorites, and a couple of prehistoric flies in amber...

I wonder if there is enough remaining for a rough guess at its age, any comments more than welcome!!

 Thanks in advance,

Lee.

...when I lived on Rhodes....

Some people have all the luck!

...Since then it has been an ornament in 2 different fish tanks...

Probably did it no harm, it's as natural an environment as that which many of our coins come from. As a comparison see my hoard group dating from 200 AD, found in Upchurch, Kent, UK. It looks similar to yours. My pot was described as a "small bellied olla"

Probably it is old.
Its rounded edges indicate that it was for a long time in the see or on a beach, i think.
