Possible Fake Augustus Coin?
« on: March 18, 2023, 05:21:18 pm »
Hi,

I am not sure if this place to ask this, but wanted to clarify if this particular coin shows signs of it being a fake?

There appears to be many pits on one side of it, the details appears to lack a lot of sharpness and the possible cleaning of the coin looks very poorly done with an abundance of scratches on it.

It is worth noting that the dealer of this coin appears to be experienced and legitimate.

If anyone could give any help determining the legitimacy of this coin it would be very appreciated.

Hi JK,

It doesn't look fake to me.

It looks like a really nice coin.

Is it an As or a Semis?

I have a few of those Augustus/altar of Lugdunum types:

Hi JK,

You double posted this coin in 2 different topics in 2 different sections of Forum.

In the other topic, I see that this coin is 26 mm. That makes it an As.

Hi Meepzorp,

Thank you for clarifying it doesn't look fake  +++

Love the look your Augustus Lugdunum coins, especially that one with the countermark is stunning.

Sorry for double posting this aha, just found the other section of the forum for this sort of topic after I posted this and didn't know how to delete it.

From a photo, the best I will usually say, and in this case it applies, I do not see anything suspicious and I would be surprised to learn it is fake.
