A sphinx found with the face of the emperor Claudius.

A remarkable find. A sphinx statue with the face believed to be of that of the Roman emperor Claudius has been found at a dig in Egypt. What's more the sphinx is smiling! To be honest it does not look a lot like Claudius to me. Maybe it will be more apparent when it is cleaned up and more clearly photographed. It certainly has a strange appearance. I cannot think of a Roman imperial portrait where the emperor is actually smiling in a similar way.

Very interesting! It doesn't sound like anyone has said yet why they're confident it's Claudius. There must be something else in the context (dated to his reign or part of an Imperial cult shrine with some kind of inscription?). I'm curious to hear more when it becomes available.
