Hi,
Could anyone tell me, what happened to the Mazzini collection please. I'm looking for his Laelian aureus.

Regards,

Mauseus

Some information here:

https://coinsweekly.com/whoswho-sammler/mazzini-giuseppe-1883-1961/

According to
https://coinsweekly.com/whoswho-sammler/biaggi-de-blasys-leo-1906-1979/
some of Biaggi's coins were sold in Leu 22 (1979) and also in NAC 49 (2008).

Cheers,

Steve

Coins from dispersed Mazzini collection appear from time to time in auctions. (ex. Mazzini)

Thanks folks. I'll try and track down those two catalogues to see if the Laelian aureus was included in either sale.

Hi Mauseus, I have Leu 22 scanned if you need it. The NAC sales are all online these days, afaik. 49 is here: https://www.arsclassicacoins.com/catalogues/auction-49/

Steve

Thanks for the NAC link. No Laelian in there. If you could get the chance to look at Leu 22 to see if there is a Laelian aureus in there I'd appreciate it.

Hi - I didn't immediately see it, but if you want to check the catalog yourself, I dropped it off here: https://rnumis.com/downloads/LEU_1979_05_08.pdf
Feel free to download it.  I'll delete it off the server when you're done.

Cheers,

Steve

Mauseus,

Mazzini's collection was published in a 5-volume set of books in 1957, with every coin illustrated, before it was dispersed.  Only 500 sets were produced.  Still, if you could find someone that owns this book set...

Hi,

I've seen the five volume set for sale and wish I had that sort of money. I don't immediately know anyone with the set or local institution with it. I have an image of the coin, both Schulte and Gilljam illustrated it. I'm trying to improve on the history or provenance of the coin in the time since he died.

There is this Aureus in Leu 52. Mazzini is not mentioned, though.

Mauseus,

Below the listing and plate of the only Laelianus aureus from the 1957  Mazzini collection, 5-volume catalogue.  Courtesy of Forum's @Carthago.

Thanks for the entry from the book. Its citing the two Nailville sales, the earliest being 1922. I wonder where it is now.

The Leu 52, ex Gadoury sale specimen is the one that turned up in the Triton V sale. Not Mazzini certainly.

The Hoffman reference is a new part of the story.

Looks like it came from Hoffmann in 1889

Hoffman's 1880's catalogues had excellent, veristic line drawings by Dardel that could certainly be compared to the Mazzini coin for confirmation. Sadly, I only have the 1888 Hoffman sale.  Missing 1889.

Yes, good woodblocks/line drawings can be helpful.

As an aside in the 1974 edition of Roman Coins and Values there is a drawing of a Laelian aureus and that is clearly the Paris specimen. Madden's 1861 Numismatic Manual utilises the British Museum specimen as the model.

Some of Hoffmann's sales are online. This one is from 1889
https://gallica.bnf.fr/ark:/12148/bpt6k1243197b?rk=85837;2
but I only see this Lelien: https://gallica.bnf.fr/ark:/12148/bpt6k1243197b/f69.item
not the Aureus.

Maybe it was in a different 1889 sale or was acquired privately.

Hi Mauseus,  another one...still not Mazzini...Ponton d'Amecourt (1887), 546. Where did this one end up?

The d'Amecourt specimen is now in the Berlin collection.

As an aside, do you realise that Ponton d'Amecourt was the first person to use the term "helicopter"?
