Trajan dupondius, Hadrian Semis added
« on: February 04, 2015, 01:20:41 am »
After a long dearth, I have found the time to begin adding coins again.  I never stopped buying though, so I have a nice little backlog to work on. I will continue to post them here as I work through them. Here are the first two :

Trajan Dupondius Via Traiana

Hadrian Semis Roma

Nice coins Dave! Love the 'moulted' colouring on the semis.

Glad to see you posting your coins again.

Hadrian Semis & Quadrans Added

Hi All,

Just added a couple more of my new coins, I hope you enjoy them. Nothing too exciting, a nice Semis and Quadrans of Hadrian. I really love Roman fractional bronzes, they are scarce, overlooked and poorly understood denominations. I began collecting them very early in my ancient numismatic adventures, and have always found them quite charming ever since.

Hi okidoki,

I do have the weight and dimensions of the Hadrian Eagle quadrans posted ( 18mm 2.52 g), so I assume you must be asking about the Hadian Lyre Semis. I do not yet have a weight on that one, but the diameter is 19mm.

Thanks,

Dave

Hi all,

Two more of my new coins, silver this time. A nice Vespasian Denarius and a Hadrian Quinarius. This quinarius of Hadrian is the first of my collection, I find them to be fascinating as they are quite mysterious and scarce.

I just checked that coin out in your gallery Jay, it is a great one! I also have one of these for Domitian as well. Looks like it was a fairly long and interesting issue!

Lucilla & Commodus Bronzes Added

Hello again, friends. Here are a few more of my new coins, that I have found time to add. It's slow going, but I'll keep plugging away at them as I can. This time I have added a nice Sestertii of Lucilla and one of Commodus, as well as a decent little Dupondius of Lucilla. Hope that you enjoy seeing them!

Group of Nero Antioch "Semis" added
« Reply #22 on: September 07, 2015, 03:08:34 am »
Added a nice little group of 6 Antioch mint "semis" of Nero. I like that this group nicely illustrates the evolution of the portraiture of Nero at Antioch, from a more generic sylized portraiture to one of a greater realism that displays a heavier Roman influence. I call these coins semis, and I put it in quotations because I know it is technically incorrect, but that's just what I call them. These coins are all around 20mm in diameter, but I've not yet gotten the weights. I hope you will enjoy them.

Trajan Ar Drachm & Sestertius Added
« Reply #24 on: January 16, 2016, 01:31:50 pm »
Hello friends, I have added a few more of my newer additions. First, an AR Drachm of Caesarea for Trajan, which by virtue of it's perfect Roman style I believe to be minted in Rome for distribution in Caesarea. Second, a Fort Red Sestertius of Trajan, with what looks to my eye to be light tooling in the hair.

Ordinarily, I won't touch a coin that has been tooled in any way, but somehow this coin still charmed me and overcame the stigma. I guess it can also serve as an example for me of deceptive, fairly well executed tooling. Don't get me wrong, I still abhor what was done to the coin, but in this particular case it still couldn't stifle the coin's overall charm.
