AE30 of Septimius Severus
« on: June 20, 2007, 02:00:05 pm »
Hi all!
I know this is a long shot as there are no legends left and the reverse is completely shot.
I can't decide if that is the ghost of the reverse design that's still visible or an illusion
since the reverse in hand looks like the top layer has come off somehow.
So I'm basically hoping someone can make an edcated guess from the portrait alone.

AE30, 12.6g

Try Neocaesarea in Pontus, cf. SNG Leypold 38-39. I can provide a scan, if needed.

Thanks Lars!
I only noticed the reverse design in the scanned picture, not in hand.
I found these two on CA.

My coin seems to have 5 columns, is the one you cite another different reverse from these two?
It looks to be a column rather than this small altar.
Also I can't decide if the first coin's obverse is a die match, I still mostly rely on the placement of letters relative to the
portrait and devices for that.

The Leypold specimens are tetrastyle, too, but Waddington's RG has a temple with five columns (no. 15). From your pic, I can't see what's on the reverse, but I think the portrait is very close, if not a die match.

Well this is much more than I had hoped for!

I'm not sure but I think I have RG as a PDF, I'll see if it's that one.

Thanks again

RG as a PDF?  Andreas, I would love to know where I could get one!

If I'm not mixing things up (which is very possible) it's available from Google books.

A very helpful FORVM member (guess who) sent me a CD since google books is not really available here.
I can make a copy and send it to you.

Many thanks for the tip; I can go ahead and download RG 1.1, 2, and 4 straight from Google, but it seems that the rest of the work wasn't actually scanned, quite a common frustration from this useful source.  If you need it and I somehow get it, I'll gladly relay it.  Best wishes,
