Republican as ID needed
« on: April 25, 2012, 03:59:19 am »
I bought this lovely as, but am not sure how to classify it. As for style, it would belong to the years 160-150 BC, but being anonymous (?) I can't pin it down on a mintmaster operating in that period. The flan (35 mms) is nicely cast, slightly irregular and weighs a good 30 grams. The dies used are considerably smaller (27 mms).
Any help appreciated.

Butterfly and Vine, RRC 184/1a, same die engraver and style as this:

It might even be a double-die match.

It's been raining for about a week in London. Yet they say there's a drought and we should avoid using water. Am thinking of walking outside for a shower.

The obverse looks very much like a die-identical one; about the reverse I am rather confident, it isn't. Yet I am very happy with this positive identification - Thanks Andrew!
