Dies, ? ? ?

(1/1)

owellber:

Hey everybody !

I have a small begginers question,

Dies, what is that actually? I have some creative ideas, but I prefer to hear the correct one.

Thanks
Omer.

Robert_Brenchley:
A die is the stamp used to impress the design onto a coin blank. The obverse die would be placed in an anvil, and the planchet, or blank, put on top of it. The reverse die would go on top of that, and it would then get one or more whacks with a hammer.

maridvnvm:
The dies were individually hand-made and were prone to wear after repeated use. Coins can exhibit this die wear. Die links / die matches are where two coins can be shown to be made from the same dies. The same obverse die could be used with different reverse dies and hence you can end up with die matches for only one side on some coins. Die matches are not as common as you would imagine!

Martin
