Caracalla Antoninian. Real or fake?
« on: December 25, 2022, 11:30:12 am »
Highly suspicious of this Caracalla Antoninian that I received as a Christmas gift.

Apologies for the Imgur link as I have had trouble attaching the images.

Any comments are appreciated

Nothing in these very poor photos screams fakeStyle is a little weird but presumably a provincial coin or imitation?

Thanks for your help.

And unfortunately, that’s as clear as I was able to get it.

Perhaps the coin is clearer in these.

This is, what is named as better picture.

Please give size and weight to help identification.

ps. on your coin the bust is laureate, not antoninian, however.

I don't recognize the issue right away, but it doesn't look fake to me, but may well be a provincial issue. The diameter and weight would help, as would some better lit photos with more contrast.

Can you make out any of the inscription in hand? For people like me that don't collect bronzes, I could look for it in Ric IV if you have even a partial inscription.

Without diameter, the only imperial issue it could be is an As, if it's in the range of around 27mm. If it's smaller, it basically has to be a provincial and the inscriptions would be Greek, not Latin.

I am having trouble seeing the reverse--what am I looking at there?

I think I see a winged victory advancing left through an arch?

Looks like people taking a shower! Not in RIC as SC lack and style is certainly not Roman. Style is Eastern possibly Antioch.
