Fake or genuine Claudius Dupondius
« on: December 24, 2022, 06:54:45 pm »
Hello!
I would like to know your opinion about this Claudius Dupondius (12.88 g).
Genuine or not?
It was bought on auction house and it said it was from german collection with name of collection owner.
One expert  I talked live, at first glance he said it was fake but after investigation he was is not sure. It could have patina stripped and the corrosion spots are visible on whole surface so it may be genuine.
Thanks for Help!

I find the fields off-putting, as though it is pressed not struck.

Does the chair look tooled?

The chair might be ok, it's in much lower relief than the figure and would not see as much wear.

It was definitely cleaned harshly at some point and has repatriated a good deal, perhaps naturally.

I think all the pearls in the lettering are struck, I see flow marks when I zoom in. No obvious evidence of casting.

If it's a pressed fake, there would be others from the same dies floating around. Did you check the fakes gallery?

An obverse die match was sold here: https://sixbid-coin-archive.com/#/en/single/l29758176?text=Claudius%20ceres .

The reverse is different which is good. Maybe try searching for some more obverse/reverse matches for comparison?

I would lean towards genuine and over cleaned.  Still a beautiful coin and should darken up nicely over time.

It seems bigger than the regular coins; what are size and weight?

Weight is 12.88 g as I wrote earlier and the size is like typical dupondius :)
