Hathi Trust - ANS and other downloads
« on: October 10, 2017, 09:34:46 am »
This somewhat relates to the earlier thread (by way of background info.):
https://www.forumancientcoins.com/board/index.php?topic=101207.0

I see that there are a few works at the Hathi site that do not come under
the aegis of the ANS (above), but that would be very useful to to download.

For example:
Coins from the Roman through the Venetian period by Margaret Thompson
(Agora II)
is not one of the ANS accessible works;
https://babel.hathitrust.org/cgi/pt?id=mdp.39015001614695;view=1up;seq=7

. . nor is this one:
The Coinage of Demetrius Poliorcetes by E. T. Newell;
https://babel.hathitrust.org/cgi/pt?id=mdp.39015025917074;view=1up;seq=9

There is a "Partner login required" to download these, and I wondered whether
anyone had such access, and could perhaps download and send them to me?
These are just the first two I noted, and I expect there are many more I want to
add to my e-library.

I have the latter work, but the binding is getting a little fragile, and it would be
easier and 'safer' to work with an e-copy.

There may even be copies on Google books, but they are usually not accessible
to the broader world, apparently only to those in the U.S.A. (+others?). They may
also be worthy of inclusion in Forum's e-Library.

Can anyone assist with these two titles (to begin with!)?

Thanks,

Walter Holt

Thanks Ed,
I was able to download Thompson's work. Which naturally led me to a few other
works.
I already had DLN linked and bookmarked, but for some reason the search did not
come up with anything. I see that they have changed their site recently, so maybe
that was a contributing factor - who knows! Maybe I erred! Mea culpa.

If anyone has access to the e-copy of Newell, then please let me know.

Maybe I should start a list of "wants".  ;D

It has been a while since this initial request, but after all this time I wonder whether
anyone has an e-copy of this work which they can share? It is still not fully available
on the Hathi site in spite of it being an ANS publication which is, as I understand it,
meant to be open access and free to use. Apparently there are a few odd exceptions.

The Coinage of Demetrius Poliorcetes by E. T. Newell;
https://babel.hathitrust.org/cgi/pt?id=mdp.39015025917074;view=1up;seq=9
(I can open it, page by page, but cannot download it like all other ANS works)

All the best,

- Walter

Dear Walter and Board,

Do you mean you can actually view individual pages in their entirety of Newell's work?  I am on the same general research quest as you and can't even see that much on HathiTrust---just the number of search hits per page...

I suspect the reason for the copyright issue stems from the fact that the book was a special joint project by both the ANS and Oxford University Press.  It is not one of the volumes, for instance, in the regular Numismatic Notes and Monographs series.

https://www.the-saleroom.com/en-gb/auction-catalogues/george-frederick-kolbe/catalogue-id-srkol10000/lot-8cfa03be-ff8b-44ea-9f79-a43200d1ecad#lotDetails

We will eventually find the digital format we seek, but in the meantime, the price of an Obol International physical reprint can be quite affordable if one looks in the right places.  For me, though, I was interested in only one particular coin in the catalog, one that I was researching for a friend, so justifying a purchase based on a need like that is of course another matter.

Try AGCO, the Antigonid Coins Online search, at http://numismatics.org/agco/ and let us know if it contains the coins from Newell's book (which I don't have).

Originals can sometimes be found.  The reprint is easy.  FORUM doesn't stock it but Brooklyn Gallery offers reprints for $40.  https://brooklyngallery.com/the-coinages-of-demetrius-poliocretes-by-newell.html

Newell died in 1941, 80 years ago, so his Oxford University Press book should be in the public domain, following the British system.  However, many of these sites follow the American rule which has made works up to 1926 public domain as of 2022.  The Coinage of Demetrius Poliorcetes was published in 1927 so I expect we must wait until 2023 to see it on places with free downloads.

Mark,

Yes, one can view full pages via the above link (though I am not aware
of any geographical or other restrictions that may be in place).

There appears to be a facility to download individual pages, which would
be a workable, if tedious, way to go about things.

I am testing this hypothesis now and it has worked for the first several
pages - so far. Just have to join them together into a single file (later).

Note that the "seq=" at the end of the URL indicates a page number.
seq=1-18 are the Cover, frontispiece, title, preface, etc.
'seq=19' = page 1; 'seq=20' = page 2; and so on, through to seq=252.

Try AGCO, the Antigonid Coins Online search, at http://numismatics.org/agco/ and let us know if it contains the coins from Newell's book (which I don't have).

Ed,

This is the link to the Newell coins in AGCO (182 pieces)

Hi Walter, Mark and board,

"The coinages of Demetrius Poliorcetes" at Hathi looks to be geo-restricted. Within the United States it's not available online (see image).  From servers in Australia (for example) it is viewable on Hathi. I had someone in Sydney confirm this with the same link that didn't work here.

Cheers,

Steve

Perhaps you are speaking of two different things.

Hathi has this book by Newell twice. One with "Limited (search only)", the other with "Full view". They are probably behaving differently :-\.

No, I had checked that. Sadly, they are both restricted here.

Use a VPN - your browser might even offer one, or you can find an free addon e.g. Hoxx VPN (free). Install that, select USA and Bob's your uncle...

Later - I tried Hoxx but can also only see both as "Limited - Search only". They must have cottoned on to Hoxx's US server and blocked it...
I also tried Opera's own VPN but that didn't work either.

A couple of months ago a German bloke put an article on academia about downloading books from Hathitrust. It worked for one book for me, but not for another - the one that worked downloaded all the pages and put them together into one pdf file.

Following in the footsteps of this discussion, I was partially successful in my efforts to view Newell's Coinages of Demetrius Poliorcetes (ANS, Oxford Press, 1927) online.  There was no joy from my VPN server in the US, but with a UK server, it was possible to have access to the full text.  I was careful to start a new browser after launching my VPN, Hotspot Shield.

I did say partial success: full access was available for "The Coinages of Demetrius Poliorcetes," but downloads were limited to just one page at a time unless you are a member of a partner organization.  I have a hardcopy of the Obol reprint, so I will not torture myself to download 252 pages and stitch them together.

I had not seen AGCO (launched in 2020), despite being attuned to the ANS search engines. There's not a lot on the site yet, 182 coins and not all of them with photos, so I'll stay tuned.

Here you go:

https://archive.org/details/newell-the-coinages-of-demetrius-poliorcetes

It may take a day or so for the preview and other formats etc. to become available, but with luck the PDF link on the right of that page should work.

And in case anyone complains:
EU: Copyright term Life + 70 years, so until (1941+70) = 2011
US: Publication + 95 years (if published 1927-1963) so until (1927+95)= 2022

Dear Dane and Board,

Wow, thank you so much for helping to cross off one of many projects that I have been working on lately!

For everyone's information, I was also able to download a PDF copy, but quickly noticed that the cover page and plates were left blank...  Could this possibly be an issue with archive.org mistakenly thinking the images were still copyrighted?  In any event, I am still able to see everything on the website, which is a lot more than I could before on HathiTrust!

Thank you again for all your hard work, Dane!  I just hope you didn't resort to stitching all those pages together yourself!

Best regards,

P.S.:  Happy birthday!  And you don't look like a day over 110.  Hee, hee!

For everyone's information, I was also able to download a PDF copy, but quickly noticed that the cover page and plates were left blank...

I see the plates on the PDF I downloaded from https://ia801505.us.archive.org/29/items/newell-the-coinages-of-demetrius-poliorcetes/Newell_The_Coinages_of_Demetrius_Poliorcetes.pdf and on the preview at https://archive.org/details/newell-the-coinages-of-demetrius-poliorcetes/page/n205/mode/2up .  I am using a Mac, Chrome Browser, and Apple Preview PDF viewer.

And in case anyone complains:
EU: Copyright term Life + 70 years, so until (1941+70) = 2011
US: Publication + 95 years (if published 1927-1963) so until (1927+95)= 2022

For a popular novel, published in both countries, this would be true.  This book was only published in London, so the 2011 date applies for US residents because the US inherits the law of the publishing country for works not published here. (I am not a lawyer).  The problem for the editors of book sharing sites is that they often only know copyright dates, not death dates.  Sites err on the side of caution.  As numismatists, we know Newell died in 1941.
