Trouble with FEL TEMP Constantius II
« on: February 17, 2007, 12:23:27 pm »
Hi Everyone:

The size of this coin is AE4- barely 15mm. The mint is Antioch. Trouble is,
the minimum sizes for this type of reverse are 16-17mm's in
RIC VIII.

I think the obverse is DN CONSTAN-TIVS PF AVG, but I could be wrong
about that, of course. Any ideas? What have I goofed up on with this
one?

Many thanks in advance.

John

I believe you are correct about the obverse legend.

Thanks, Noah. That would make it RIC VIII 187A, I think, but the diameter given in RIC (dia 17-18mm) is way off for this coin (barely 15mm). I wonder if that is a common happening...

It seems that your attribution is correct.  Sometimes the flans are slightly smaller than normal. Yours was not struck off-center, it is just a smaller flan (look how the portrait is centered, yet there is no room for the legends).  I believe yours is this case.  Here is the Wildwinds example for your specimen.  It also has that sandy patina that yours does.

Sometimes coins are indeed struck on smaller flans, just as they can be struck on larger flans.
