Help with a CONSTANS AE
« on: February 15, 2007, 06:56:48 am »
Hi everyone:

2 questions:

1. The obverse legend on this coin appears to be

DN FL CONS-TANS AVG

(seems clear to me) but this does not seem to be a common obverse legend
for Constans?!

2. The exergue appears to be A*Q - does that look right?

Any help on this coin would be appreciated.

John

Hi John!

It can't be Aquileia because AQ is never seperated! So it should be R*P, Rome. RIC VIII, Rome 26; LRBC 615; struck before April 340; common. The obv. legend I think is DN FL CONSTANS AVG without a break.

Thanks Jochen (and Ricardo)!

Another valuable lesson learned. If you cannot match a clear obverse legend with the mint you think it is, you've got the mint wrong and should look for other possibilities...

Thanks again.
