is this a barbarous coin or just a fantasy piece
« on: January 12, 2023, 03:23:20 pm »
I recently acquired this as an "Unknown" type  thinking it might be a vandal coin or similar, but I think I bought a fake/fantasy
it weighs 1.4g and looks struck not cast to my eye. any thoughts would be appreciated

Hi,

It's a crude modern fake of a late Roman / Byzantine third siliqua, sadly.

Regards,

Don't be too hasty condemning it, as I found something very similar and authentic on Acsearch:
VANDALEN, Geiserich, 428-477, AE Nummus. Diad. Büste r. Rs.K. 1,35g. RIC 3819, ss
Looks very similar, doesn't it?

Not really, not very similar at all.  Style and surfaces are very different.

How do we know that this coin sold by the German auction house E. H. is actually authentic?
Their auctions are "full with fakes" and they have offered in the past already many Serbian fakes as authentic.
Full with fakes = meaning many more and more obvious fakes than in auctions of most other auction houses.

If I were a forger, I would forge today mainly various barbaric oddities, imitations, etc. Barbaric taste and clumsiness can explain everything.
