fake or not?
« on: August 24, 2007, 02:12:48 pm »
Hello,

What do you think about these coins?
    Weight coin 1: 2,31 gram
   Weight coin 2: 2,6 gram

Best regards and thanks for the help.

The Geta is underweight for the type, my examples weigh 3.1 and 3.4 grams.

That wouldn't be the problem with me.
The weights vary wildly by that time.
But why do two coins that are 70 years apart, of which at least the Sabina should be good silver, have so EXACTLY the same dull colour of oxydized billon, and EXACTLY the same sand encrustations? The style, however, is absolutely correct.

Rupert, to me that is simply they way they were hoarded and cleaned.  I am more worried abut the weight and style.

The Sabina I would be bothered by the weight, The Caracalla that would not bother me a bit, because weights from that period do fluctuate quite a bit, but put the two together, combined with the same tone and sand fill..... now I would not be real comfortable with either one. though from the pics I see nothing obviously wrong with them, and I think they very well may be fine, but I would pass on them.
