Rhodos Dracma
« on: May 29, 2005, 05:57:15 am »
Buona Domenica a tutti.

Su WildWinds (http://www.wildwinds.com/coins/greece/rhodes/t.html) ho trovato un riferimento "Jenkins_38" (Jenkins 38; SNG Helsinki -; From the Charles E. Weber Collection):
Rhodes AR Drachm. Circa 170-150 BC. Radiate head of Helios right / Rose; sun left, QRASUMENHS (magistrate).

Browsing through FORVM's old topics I came across that one here.

Dear roth37,

Your coin is a silver Plinthophoric Drachm of Rhodes. (Plinthos is the reverse inquse square, these coins are distinguished principally by this feature from the preceding issues).
Kenneth Jenkins places your variety #38  (magistrate: ΘΡΑΣΥΜΕΝΗΣ, symbol: Sun) in his second (B) group of c. 170-150 BC. (Rhodian Plinthophoroi - A Sketch in Kraay-Mørkholm Essays, Louvain-la-Neuve, 1989).
Plinthophoric coinage as a whole was a vast series issued for more or less than one hundred years under a plethora of magistrates, bearing various field symbols.
Sear refers only to a small minimum of these officials. This is OK since Sear's catalogue is not a dedicated study of the type but a general reference work.
Sear's 5065, the ΘΡΑΣΥΜΕΝΗΣ example you mentioned is the Hemidrachm denomination (facing Helios obverse) issued under the same magistrate.
Your example looks genuine and very nice. Another one from the former Karl's collection here: http://www.acsearch.info/ext-record.html?id=141496
