Re: Flavian gallery - Vespasian and Domitian dupondii
« Reply #525 on: March 18, 2017, 12:07:01 pm »
Hello everyone.

These two dupondii are among my last additions.

Vespasian coin is a rare radiate example from the Lugdunum mint. Laureate head was more common for this mint; strangely enough, this issue is known only with left portrait.

Domitian coin was struck under Titus reign. It's an upgrade for a lower example; they share the same obverse die.

Re: Flavian gallery - 2 rarities from Uncertain Asia Minor mint
« Reply #528 on: March 28, 2017, 03:01:12 pm »
Hello everyone.

Due to a singular coincidence, I received today two coins purchased from different dealers, yet both struck by the same mysterious Asian mint.

The first is an extremely rare small bronze of Vespasian, which is missing in the RIC plates. The obverse is a bit outcentered, otherwise the coin is very pleasant in hand.

https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-136039

The second coin is a worn but still collectable Domitian denarius, belonging to the famous O mint series.

Re: Flavian gallery - Two rare, stylish and well toned Domitian denarii
« Reply #531 on: March 29, 2017, 02:51:33 pm »
Hello everyone.

Today I received two lovely Domitian denarii, both struck in what I consider the best period of his coinage.

The first is an example of RIC 339 (fourth issue of year 85). I already owned two examples of this type, but I couldn't resist because of style, toning, different dies than my previous examples.

https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-136045

The second, RIC 184, belongs to the second issue of year 84, one of my favorites. In great style, perfectly centered and with a nice toning.

I really enjoy them both.

Kind regards

Alberto

Hello everyone.

Just added a new Vespasian dupondius with the common FELICITAS reverse.

It shows a good portrait and a green emerald patina.

Kind regards

Hello everyone.

Thanks to David last post, today I realized having two different varieties of the same type, instead of two examples of the same coin.

I'm very glad.

I think you missed typed.  The coin legend is VESPASIAN not VESPASIANVS

Realized I have the variant without wings as well!

Re: Flavian gallery - Titus Alexandria Tetradrachm
« Reply #541 on: April 08, 2017, 11:19:33 am »
Hello everyone.

The Titus coinage in Alexandria is very short: just a handful of tetradrachms, with no bronze coinage at all.

So far I owned only coins struck in year 3 (80-81), today I finally added to my collection a tet from year 2 (79-80).

Nicely toned with omonoia on reverse.

Kind regards

Alberto

It's always nice when that happens. Lately, I've been hunting down variants of types I already have, regardless whether or not the RIC authors have assigned them their own unique catalogue numbers. It's neat when they do recognise them though.

« Reply #543 on: April 13, 2017, 01:51:26 pm »
Hello everyone,

it's always nice getting coin cited in major references and / or coming from important collections.

Three of them (Vespasian and two Domitia) come from the Plankenhorn collection, the Domitian was wrongly classified in RPC II andd will have a separate entry in a next Supplement.

Kind regards

Alberto

Last coin arriving before Easter is a scarce Vespasian denarius.

A type I've been missing so far, nicley toned.

Happy Easter.

Re: Flavian gallery - Trhree rare Domitian Denarii
« Reply #549 on: May 03, 2017, 12:28:02 pm »
Hello everyone.

Today I received two very rare Domitian denarii.

The first one belongs to the misterious "o" mint and is heavily worn. I decided to get in any case, because I think it would be very hard to find a better one, being possibly the rarest type of the series. The difference with the contemporary Rome issue of the same type is self evident, mostly about the portrait. This type represents the very first association between Domitian and the Goddess Minerva.

I took a new shot of my old Rome example in order to allow an easy comparison.

https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-136812

The second coin is an early "pulvinar" denarius, very rare and in nice condition.

Kind regards

Alberto
