Do these people hate Hadrian?  They mutilate so many of his coins?

At this rate will there be any sestertii of Hadrian with authentic portraits?

I think there is no way to confirm many of these actually ever were authentic. If the entire surface is gone and a fake patina applied, how do you know it is not a modern cast?

Good point--and what a devilish way to turn a total fake into something that is not so apparent!

I also hate it when people spoil ancient coins by tooling and applying false patinas. I’ve got a Marcus Aurelius denarius which I assume has the same die wear on both sides. However, I hope it’s not been tooled.

I had to google what this "dremel" is. Now it is obvious that I am far from being a handyman...

The Augustus maybe tooled, but I think it is just a completely new fake.

I would not call the other two coins tooled either. I would call would call them ruined by botched cleaning attempts.

Well, you're certainly right, but... Dremeling the whole field of a coin and removing many details in a cleaning process... If it's not tooling...

Hadrian does seem to be picked out for special treatment. Here are a couple from a prolific amateur who declares these (and many dozens more bronzes) as "cleaned", "smoothed" and repatinated.

"Tooled to imitate almost XF" would be more apt.

Here's one I came across while doing some research on RPC Online. The description does say 'traces of tooling' but I wonder if the reverse has more than a trace. I don't think I've seen another ancient coin depicting Dionysos quite like this one.

Some red deposits have been removed, but I see no evidence of altered details, that is of tooling.

That is a stunning medal.  I have never seen it before.  I am surprised as that bust is a true masterpiece of numismatic art!

Interestingly both sides show sings of at least two strikes/hammer blows.

In matter of fact RPC says: " reverse legend with traces of tooling"

I can't comment on the hair or field.  But I am not sure the legend has been tooled.

The only "signs" I see are consistent with the double strike seen on the nose and mouth area.  The legend from 10h-2h has also seen a double strike.  It looks like the final, solid strike was up and to the left of the initial strike.

It's informative to read the comments regarding this coin. The consensus appears to be that the bust of Dionysos is not significantly, if at all, modified. It certainly is an extraordinary image. I was almost shocked by the image when I first came across it and also surprised I had not seen the coin illustrated previously.

I think these traces of tools are described. This is not a tooling but scratches on a piece of metal before the coin is stamped.
