Need help with this 28mm As
« on: May 17, 2007, 11:14:02 am »
No obverse legend on this 28mm As is visible and I don't recognize the portrait, although I probably should. :-\

Any ideas?  Thanks.

Stabbing wildly in the dark, which is always a dangerous thing to do. It looks like Vespasian with Spes on the reverse.
Something like this one perhaps (RIC 598 from wildwinds):-

Regards,
Martin

Thanks for the response, Martin.  I have a Vespasian As with a Spes reverse in my collection, and this portrait just doesn't look right.  The reverse is probably Spes...in fact it is almost a perfect match to the other one I own.  That obverse portrait just doesn't strike me as Vespasian though.  Did he ever have a facelift?  ;)

A bit more like Domitian, perhaps?  There is also a left-facing Titus with Spes, but apparently only as a sestertius.

Looks like Agrippa to me. Here's a Wildwinds page of many examples:

Possibly Domitian Caesar under Titus, like this one from Wildwinds.
