Sword tip protector?
« on: June 20, 2021, 03:06:43 pm »
Another find from roman grounds where a villa once stood. I've been told it's a sword tip protector but i'm not even sure if that's an actual thing.

What I think that means is the knob on the bottom of a sword scabbard.

There are such things and they look similar.  I will look in more detail later but try to look up Roman sword scabbards.

Yes Shawn you are correct, that's what I meant. Someone showed me a picture of one a while back and it seems to match spot on. If it helps you in finding a match, item finds date 1-2nd century AD. I'll try and find some examples but i'm very unfamiliar with it.

What would be the purpose of a hole on both sides ?

Maybe it's wishful thinking but I feel they look exactly like these on gladius examples.

Yes, I thought it did but didn't have my references present.

Nice piece.
