Fake sestertius of Agrippina senior
« on: November 08, 2015, 12:39:41 pm »
I have this Agrippina senior sesteritius it is 31mm, it is an obvious fake the rough surfaces and the obvious cast marks but mainly that it is made out of silver, but i always wondered if faking why silver and not typical bronze as the original sesteri are made.
Any thoughts?

Because they were expecting to sell it to someone who doesn't know that they are usually bronze but who might be more drawn to a silver coin.

Or because they were hoping someone would think it was an unpublished silver medallion with the same types as the known sestertii, so obviously very valuable!

Well in this case who thought like this when faking did not succeed because I bought it for less than the silver value put in it (less than 10$).

I see some white metal that may or may not be solid silver.

Hi Andreas, it was examined by a friend who works in Jewelry for long  time and confirmed that it is made of silver.
