The usual Hebrew term translated as “money,” keseph, literally means “silver.” (Ge 17:12) There was no coined money in Israel during the First Temple Period (1006-586 BCE).
Instead, pieces of precious metals were used, weighed out at the time a transaction was made.
Jer 32:10 "Then I wrote in a deed and affixed the seal and took witnesses as I went weighing the money in the scales."

A nice dynastic type! The frontal rather than profile head of Titus in the reverse type is a neat detail, as Jay remarks in your gallery.
RPC 1649 lists two with the abbreviation ET: Berlin ex Imhoof, published by him in Swiss Num. Review 1898; and Seaby's Bulletin, Sept. 1982, D 75.
Maybe that second example is identical with yours, if Bruce Brace purchased it from Seaby's? I can't easily check for a possible illustration, since our run of bound Bulletins ends with 1972.

Hi,
I have a more or less complete run of Seaby Coin & Medal Bulletin from 1944 through to its eventual demise. Below is an image of the Seaby coin from 1982, described as "scarce, good VF". It proves categorically that your coin is not the Seaby specimen.

I am very happy to have added a Domitian Ae 25mm, Sebaste, Samaria with a clear LXF countermark to my gallery. The host coin itself is in excellent condition considering the countermarked coins are usually quite worn. Enjoy!

It does seem like some obverse smoothing but I don't believe any tooling. This coin is Ex Harry N. Sneh Collection and there was no mention of any work done on the coin, not that means anything.
I appreciate any observations in connection with possible (or definite) manipulation of any of the coins in my galley.

I just added another Titus "Capta" Sestertius. It's a type I've been looking for for quite a while. The reverse legend is more legible in hand.

I think it's the same obv. die: lots of similarities, no decisive differences.

Taking a break from my break and I'm back to the Capta, or more specifically, Devicta, type! This time it's a coin that came to me as a gift, quite the huge surprise as a matter of fact. This is a thrill for me as I think it is of fine style and, in hand, the breaks through the plating do not distract from its appeal.

Just added a "Vespasian in quadriga" denarius. Although the reverse is a bit off center, I found the portrait unusually nice. I get more of an Ephesian feeling from it than Antioch.

Just added a nice, worn Vespasianus Sestertius.
I picked this up as a coin I can carry and to show friends without panicking about it being scratched or dropped. Interestingly enough, most people find a coin in this condition more believably ancient than one in GVF. A 2000 year old coin has to be worn almost smooth, doesn't it???

I'm eagerly awaiting a two more Judaea related pieces, probably a couple weeks away. One is very hard to find in solid silver but I was finally able to locate one that didn't destroy my budget. The other, a very worn bronze, but extremely rare in any condition.

Your assumption on the silver is correct sir!
As far as the bronze is concerned, rare and worn for a Judean coin is a description that encompasses quite a variety, as many of the rare types are often heavily corroded.
To narrow it down, it was minted in Caesarea Paneas by a Jewish client king. Although he died long before the rebellion in 66, according to Schwartz, "The hopes which were raised by his enthronement, and which refused to die with him, contributed to the faith which led to the great rebellion of 66-73 CE, and to catastrophe."
The obverse is the reigning Emperor and the reverse honors his deceased father in triumphal quadriga.

I finally received my Agrippa I, Hendin 1240 this week. Most coins of Agrippa I were evidently of a poor quality alloy, very susceptible to corrosion. Mine is no exception so you're going to have to use a bit of imagination but, do to it's rarity, I'm thrilled to have it in my collection.

I have just added a denarius from Antioch commemorating Vespasian's triumph after defeating Judaea. I too will likely suffer defeat in trying to explain to my wife how this new addition is NOT a triplicate.

Because this is being followed in two threads, the following has also been posted under the Metal Antiquities Board.
The short story can be found by simply reading the description that’s been added to the photo in my gallery.

The long story is as follows.
After buying this fragment, I was thrilled to add it to my collection. I found however that reading 2000 year old Latin engraved in bronze plate was more difficult than I imagined. Then Shawn and Benito pointed out that the engraving was not at the typical 90 degree angle. Added to that, after examining several other diplomas, I found the striations on the one side odd as well.
Basically it came down to:
Patina and lettering = Authentic
Atypical letter orientation, weird striations and no provenance = Fake
At this point I was kicking myself for not doing research BEFORE making a purchase. What a thought!
But then, a ray of hope! Stultus is able to name the Emperor, Severus Alexander!
This focused my research and I was able to find other diploma's of Elagabalus and Severus Alexander with identical striations. A bit of relief.
Further searching brought me to a fantastic scholar in the Classics Faculty in Oxford who has worked with other high profile Alexander diplomas. (And modestly would like to remain anonymous.)
After explaining the concerns, here are the relevant parts of his response in quotes:
“The witnesses' names are usually inscribed at right-angles to the 'inner' text on the other face of Tablet II, but on very few diplomas they are inscribed on the outside of Tablet I, with the 'inner' text (duplicating the 'outer', visible text) inscribed on the other face. I think yours must be an example, since the writing looks all right to me. The main text contains part of the usual formulas for Alexander Severus.
In the lines below, there is enough to show that the recipient was a veteran of the Praetorian Guard, who was granted the right of contracting a legal Roman marriage.
As far as the dating of the diploma is concerned, line three reads: COS III, preceded by II, the last two digits of the TRIB POT number. He became COS III in 229, and remained this until his death in 235, so the possible years are 229 (TRIB POT VIII), 230 (VIIII), 233 (XII), 234 (XIII) and 235 (XIIII).”
I (Nemo) then spent some time translating the Latin text he provided into English seen below in quotes. (I didn't know that the next morning he would send me another email.)

'The Emperor Caesar, son of the deified Antoninus Pius the Great [i.e. 'Caracalla'], grandson of Severus Pius [i.e. Septimius Severus], Marcus Aurellius [thus usually written] Severus Alexander Pius Felix ['happy'] Augustus, Pontifex Maximus, in the [...]th year of his Tribunician Power, Consul three times [i.e. 229 or later: see above], Father of his Country. The names of the soldiers who have served in the ten Severan Praetorian Cohorts (numbered) 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, Pius Vindex ['dutiful, avenging'], who have dutifully and bravely completed their service, (to them) I have granted the right of Roman marriage, provided it is with one woman only and she their first wife, so that even if they marry women of non-Roman status ...'"

You are correct about this type being a bit rarer with IMP XV. Notice how it reads TR P VIIII compared with the next issue's TR P IX dated to the first half of 80.

Yes, that is a die match with my example, evidence of how rare this type is for Vespasian at Rome. Heaps of this type were struck at Antioch, odd that Rome was stingy with it. I purchased mine nearly 10 years ago and yours is the first I've seen in trade since.

A while back I acquired a Military diploma fragment he issued that only has a partial date on the third line. The possible years are 229 (TRIB POT VIII), 230 (VIIII), 233 (XII), 234 (XIII) and 235 (XIIII).

This was attributed as Antioch mint RIC 1563 but I believe it is from the Rome mint RIC 371 which makes it a very nice find. I hope I'm right..... ;D

I posted the portrait in another thread, I feel it has a distinct Alexandrian style to it. In any case, this is a very hard to find Neptune type from the Lyon mint. Not only misattributed but poor dealer pictures to boot. It certainly saw a lot of circulation but I'm very happy with it!
As always, I'm open to any mistakes I've made in attribution as well!

It does look like a die match with your Vespasian. Apparently Vespasian and Titus Caesar denarii were struck from the same workshop in the mint.

This should be one of the earliest Emperor in Quadriga rev. dies, because of its combination on your coin with an AVG P M obv. die. That AVG P M obv. legend was an earlier form than AVG P M COS IIII, Vespasian's usual obv. legend for the Emperor in Quadriga rev. type. We have to bear in mind, however, that it is a rare type that probably wasn't produced for long and used comparatively few rev. dies.
On bronze coins there are many shared rev. dies between Vespasian, Titus, and Domitian. So I wouldn't consider your shared rev. die on denarii of Vespasian and Titus to be anything unusual, requiring special explanation.

I created a new folder and downloaded the picture. You then right click on the picture and copy the image address or location. Paste the address in your description where you want the picture to appear.
At the beginning of the address add img inside two square brackets [] and at the end of the script add /img inside two square brackets [].
Then save your changes and the image appears.

Both of those are keepers! The Vespasian reverse is wonderful and the Titus Caesar portrait is quite stylish (interesting it's a different obverse die than my own example considering the rarity!). You made out very well!

I'm far behind in photographing and posting new acquisitions but here are a few that some may enjoy seeing.
1st, is a finely detailed Julius Caesar Elephant Denarius albeit with a flat strike. It came with the original receipt from the HJBerk 90th Buy or Bid Sale, April 17, 1996, Lot 232, listed as Mint state.

2nd, a LEG IIII denarius. This is not an easy coin to find and these always remind me of a young Titus Flavius Vespasianus. Vespasian was in the Fourth Legion as a young man and the legion sided with him during the Civil Wars.

3rd, a Hadrian / Libertas Denarius. I found the striking portrait and interesting reverse to much to pass up.

As far as the half shekel is concerned, I should have mentioned it came with an old Spink ticket that gives the date as 1BC. That means (if they're correct) it's either dated PKE 2/1 BCE or PKς 1BC/1AD.
I'm also going to post this in Biblical coins to see if anyone over there might be able to decipher the date.

I am thrilled to add two beautiful and interesting tetradrachms to my gallery. Issued under Ptolemy I while at war with Antigonus.
The first shows traces of the undertype

This example was encapsulated (now freed) and described as damaged. However, there is no damage to speak of. It does have weight adjusted edges and the undertype profile of Alexander on the reverse. It starts above the eagle and continues into Athena's shield and beyond.

That is a superb coin! Even without the c/m it would be fabulous.
I've only acquired one Ephesian with that c/m, and it was a common type.

It was a treat to add this long sought after rarity. What appears to be a common type IV siglos is actually a very rare type with a helmet engraved in the reverse. This is by far the best i've ever seen of this type.

Pi-style, folded flan; Mesopotamia, Levant, Arabia, or Egypt, Imitative;

Yes, another shekel, I need help! Corroded and struck from worn dies, I was glad this coin received very little interest at auction. An extremely rare date, made far more interesting with the detail that it was recut, made it irresistible for me.
