Title: Discussion and Gallery Update Issues
Post by: Joe Sermarini on May 31, 2021, 05:24:56 pm
Please report any Discussion and Gallery update issues here. Sorry, but I accidentally deleted the old thread.

Please provide the URL or coin title for any gallery page with scrambled text. We believe we have found and fixed most of them.

Open Issues
- Many symbols including letters with accents, middle dots, dashes, etc. incorrectly display as .
- Members' Gallery Category and Gallery Titles need to be larger and bold.
- Gallery moderators need admin access: Robert_Brenchley, *Alex, Enodia.
- The New Album button is not working. Cannot create new albums.
- Uploading with symbol Ø crashes upload.

After many hours of work, Sorin thinks the problem on the gallery is fixed. There are undoubtedly still some left. If you spot one, please provide a link to it here. If you only see one, maybe just fix it manually but if there are multiples of the same, a link would probably be a better solution. Thanks.

He is applying the same fixes to the Fake Coin Reports and Maps now.

The board is going to have to go through a similar update soon. Hopefully, the gallery experience with this issue will make that easier for Sorin.

Another weird bug I think. On the gallery main page for my roman republics, the description shown in the Obverse//reverese has character fonts on it, but when I click on the actual pic of the coin, everything is OK font-wise.

There are others in my gallery doing the same thing.

Here is the pic of it.

URL link please. Need URL not screenshot. Thanks.

Well its only on the main gallery page, so for my roman republics, the link is below.

https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/thumbnails.php?album=3514

And the coins with the characters are "Q. Sicinius" & "P. Fonteius P.f. Capito."

URLS to the coins themselves, the characters are gone and text is fine, only the main page it shows the issue.

Dear Sorin and Joe!

It is the hard work, I fixed some problem in my Republic Gallery, and some others, but my Hungarian and other medieval coins are complicated me. The number of coins is so many.
It’s probably easier to handle together than individually, in case Sorin succeeds, I’ll fix the individual bugs if I have to but hundreds of pieces are hard for me.

https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/thumbnails.php?album=6682
https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/thumbnails.php?album=6643
and more...

I recognized the Sorin try to do some but not finished jet...

 Thanks

I realize for some it is a bit late, but I have some advice. Never use special characters in your file names. Never make file names that are more than about 20 characters long.

Is there still a place where gallery owners can see the number of views?  I see that the coin thumbnails now show the coin's description under them, but seeing the view count was also helpful to in deciding which coins to post next based on what was of interest.  Is there a place I can still see that info?

Thanks!!

There is no place where only the gallery owner can see the number of views. All or none.

Gallery KEY WORDS are a few terms that are important for finding the coin using search. Terms that are already in the description, are unnecessary. In other words, most of the time there is no reason to add keywords. In fact, most members do not use them at all. Certainly do not copy the description into the key word field. Most of the existing key words in the gallery should be deleted.

You can still see the view count in the file information box.

If you still have scrambled letters or , you probably have a non utf-8 character in the image file name or your keywords. If it is in a keyword, I suggest deleting it. The keywords have no really useful function on the gallery.  Please do not use anything other than ordinary plain letters and numbers in filenames.

Sorin will try to fix it for all of them with code tomorrow.

What file information box?  the only way I still see views is if I click on the "most viewed" filter.

Joe, I don't care if other people can see the view count, the issue is I can't see it.  If there is a way to see views in the current configuration, it's not obvious to me, but I'd be grateful if someone would explain how to see the info.

Love, love, love that the gallery descriptions are back in the overviews! Makes it much easier to browse. Thank you.

Click on the coin in your gallery, there is an information box

I believe we are done with the character issue on the Gallery. If you find a random character here and there, please fix them manually. If you find a bigger problem, please let us know.

Also, if you go into the EDIT FILES function for your gallery, the view count is listed just next to the RESET VIEW COUNTER control.

Full coin writeups now show in the thumbnail views of my gallery.  My write-ups often contain lengthy, okay...long-winded, background, analysis and thoughts on the issues. Other coins have briefer write-ups.  The mix causes the thumbnail views to be inconsistently sized and difficult to browse, IMO.  Is there a way for me to limit my thumbnails to just the "title" I give each coin?  This would give my gallery a cleaner look.  I'm hopeful that people will click to read the more detailed write-ups of interesting coins. I don't feel the need to put those write-ups out front.

You know, I just can't please everyone. I had a LOT of complaints when we had just the title because that was supposedly better for mobile.

I don't think there is any option within a gallery but maybe someone else knows different. I have a different view than everyone else.

BTW, I LOVE your long-winded, background, analysis and thoughts on the issues. I think they are better than a cleaner look.

For some icons I don't get an icon but only a placeholder, the corresponding URLs cannot be found:

Hit control f5 on your keyboard. I had the same problem and didn't realise that this issue was cache related until Joe told me about it.

I agree. I learn a lot from really well researched write-ups, and I think they are essential if the Galleries are to be used as a research tool (which I like to think Iis true).

The issue I'm having now is that I don't stay logged in, and have to log in again every time I return to the board.

Dear Joe and Sorin,

Today I created a couple of new folders in my gallery and tried to move a few coins to the new folders. For the most part, it did, but for these three coins, only the text carried over the images disappeared.
That’s when I stopped making changes I didn’t want to lose any more coins. What should the next step be...?

Thank you for your help.

Hi Joe,

I think that I have fixed it for you. Your coins weren't lost because your full size coin photos image files were carried across but for some reason the thumbnails and reduced images hadn't been saved so they weren't being displayed.

Thanks.  Understood about not pleasing everyone.  I most often view on my mobile, and that's where the look is kinda messy, with varying column widths etc.  Tonight, I looked on a full desktop screen for the first time since the change and it looks perfectly fine!
