Coin Weight, any more info?
« on: November 14, 2012, 04:34:06 am »
Hello Everyone,

Here is a coin weight with the following details:

Obverse:Greek_Nu::Greek_Gamma: within outline
Reverse:  Blank
Measurements:  13.29g; 20.2mm x 18.3mm

:Greek_Nu::Greek_Gamma:, 53?  Its weight neatly corresponds to three solidi, so does the :Greek_Gamma: stand for that?  What about the :Greek_Nu:?

Is there anything else you can tell me, like time-period and place?

Thanks,

Kevin  :)

Hi,
Yes, this is for 3 sollidi. In greek - nomisma.
 :Greek_Nu: =nomisma.
 :Greek_Gamma: = 3.
Period: 6-8 th century (probably)

Very nice, is that silvering imbedded in the markings?

Hi,

Simon Bendall's book/booklet on this series is a must have for those interested in Byzantine weights. It covers both coin and commercial weights.

Thanks, I'll have to track that book down.

As for the silvering, not sure but don't think so.
