Coin list from a survey of a smaal Roman town
« on: January 22, 2006, 02:01:10 pm »
This represents the preliminary results of a full metal detecting survey of a small Roman town in Yorkshire. All the finds were fully gps'd. A more complete list will be published at some point in the future along with all the relevant information.
I'm not going to put any interpretation on this at the moment, there's a lot of work to do yet!!

Interesting gap in the coin record between Gordian III and Valerian. I wonder why?

Alex.

Hi,

Which town is it? Aldborough, Catterick or is it to the east of York? I have a large database of third century hoards and site finds from the Western provinces.

Regards,

Mauseus

Hi Alex,

this gap is common to the 2 town sites that we have surveyed. The other site has produced no Gordians or Valerian. The PAS site seems to confirm this as a typical assemblage.

Hi Mauseus,

the site lies to the East of York and has a Flavian period Fort located there.
You being a local should realise the location without too much difficulty.

It must be stressed that this represents the finds from an area of about 200 acres and the complete site is spread over 1000+.
