A new coin to my collection. A reverse error that I hadn't seen before.

Septimius Severus denarius

Obv:IMP CAE L SEP SEV PERT AVG COS II, laureate head right
Rev:– MONTE (sic) AVG, Moneta standing left, holding scales in right hand, cornucopiae in left
Minted in Emesa. A.D. 194 – A.D. 195
Reference:– BMCRE -. RIC -. RSC -. This error not noted. cf. BMC 380ff. RIC 411a. RSC 330 .

This error not noted in any of the major references

Regards,
Martin

Great to know the ancients sometimes had trouble with spelling too. Picturing the die maker slapping his forehead after seeing his mistake

Reminds me of this recent acquisition from Gitbud-Naumann: like Martin's, but different obv. legend break (SE - V), heavy at 3.77g, axis 10-11, rev.

M -ONE. - . - AVG,

omitting the normal T that Martin's engraver flubbed, and adding two dots as space-fillers at the top.

BMC 380 note records this variety MONE AVG from a publication I am unfamiliar with, Stariner, 1928-9, p. 99, no. 12. I wonder if that coin too had the two dots between MONE and AVG.

One further difference: Martin's coin is much finer than mine!

I noticed the MONE in BMC and it is great to see an example in the flesh.
Another good find Curtis and one that completely passed me by.

Martin
