ISLAMIC COIN HELP NEEDED
« on: February 16, 2007, 07:49:20 am »
Hello all!

This coin has been a mystery to me for some time... yet there is something vaguely familiar to me about it!  ANY information would be helpful... I don't think it is too old... but if someone can read a mint or rulet, I would appreciate it very much!

Hi Dave

Your first piece is a 'nauruz' or New Year's present token from Iran: the obverse is upside down and shows (I think) a mirror on a stand flanked by two candlesticks.

Originally there was a small three-shahi coin which was the favourite one to give as new year presents, but when they stopped making these in the early 1900's private tokens like yours were produced as substitutes. Some have dates, but many are undated like yours: it could be anything between the 1940's and the 1990's.

The second one looks like an Ottoman coin from Algeria, but i don't think there is enough design left to identify it further.

Best wishes

Alan

Thanks, Alan!

The second coin is much clearer than the scan -- When I get some time, I will transcribe the lettering and post here.
I'm glad to have the first one identified!  Again, many thanks!

Hi

Alan is not that far off. The second one for sure is an Ottoman AE Mangir of Suleyman II 1099AH. The mint is not on but the most common mint of this series is Qstantaniyye (Istanbul). The style and the metal of this coin show clearly that this is of the Suleyman II era.

Please check weight to have it confirmed.

Best wishes,
Burak

Hi all,
This is a copper mangir of Ahmed III, cause I see 15 of 1115... and from the shadows, I guess the mint is Bitlis... mind you its just a guess. :-) Frank
