Athena with owl on Odessos Gordian
« on: October 14, 2005, 09:04:35 pm »
Hi!

Here is a third coin I can't find in the online databases. It is a AE27 from Odessos for Gordian III.

AE27, 14.45g
obv. AYT KM ANT GORDIANOC [D??]
        in exergue TRANKY / LEINA
bust of Gordian, draped and cuirassed, laureate, r., and bust of Tranquillina, draped,
        diademed, l.
rev. ODH - C - CEITWN
Athena, helmeted,  with chiton and peplos, stg. l., holding inverted spear in l. hand and
owl in r. hand; shield l. behind her feet on ground
       E in l. field

This coin resembles AMNG 2383, but there Athena holds no owl but is resting her r. hand on the shield.

Any information for attributing this coin?

(As usually the coin in hand looks much better!)

Best regards

A friend of mine has one that seems to correspond to yours, with the owl (do you have an E in left field?  Yes, your description mentions it).  He cites Weber 2667.  That's L. Forrer, The Weber Collection.  4 volumes.  London 1922-1929.  The one with no owl, as you say, is in AMNGPat L.

Thanks, Pat, for the attribution. The pic is poorly done with my scanner. In hand it is much nicer (as always!)

Best regards
