New variety from Nicopolis ad Istrum
« on: June 23, 2017, 03:33:12 pm »
Dear Board,

I have here a new variety from Nikopolis ad Istrum.

obv: AV KAI LCE-P CEVHROC

rev: NEIKOPOLITW-N PROC ICTRON

diameter: 26 mm

weight: 11.5 g

This variety with a P in the legend isn't listed in AMNG/1 nor in HHJ 2017, although the reverse die is listed ( HHJ 8.14.10.15-16 )

Any comments are appreciated !

Two others from same obv. die, same rev. type, same or very similar rev. die: Varbanov 2221 and my collection.

A new die combination, not listed in Hristova-Hoeft-Jekov (2017). I would like to add it to Nikopolis Addenda #5

BTW Varbanov 2221 doesn't have the decisive P of CE - P CEVHROC.

Best regards

But V. 2221 appears to be from the same obv. die as Clueless' coin.

So either that separated Π was added to the die in the course of its life, or, more probably, the Π has disappeared from the Varbanov coin, by die clogging or later alteration.
